Domino is the mistress of Emil Largo, the villain of “Thunderball” kept away from the world, lonely and resentful, so easy prey for Bond when they meet. When the agent reveals that her keeper killed her brother, Domino becomes vengeful and turns against him, doing everything that she can to help bond and eventually saving his life by firing a harpoon into her former lover’s back and avenging her brother’s memory.
Another Miss World runner up, Claudine Auger was born in Paris in 1941 and went to study acting at the Parisian Drama Conservatory.
Claudine Auger’s break came with marriage, to a much older director Pierre Gaspard-Huit, who immediately started giving her roles in movies. I’m saying nothing….
Claudine Auger was eventually spotted by “Thunderball’s” writer who was on holiday at the same place as her and invited to audition for the role of Domino, a part she later claimed to have related to as they were both romantically linked with older men.
Originally written as an Italian, the producers decided to rewrite the character to reflect Auger’s own heritage, so impressed were they by her audition. There are rumours that Sean Connery, then undergoing troubles in his marriage also become “close” with her.
On the ship, on the open ocean, Sean Connery kept repeating: “You have nothing to fear, Claudine, you are amazing. And Terence Young added: “Between the assembly sessions and confidential screenings, I saw the movie seventeen times. Do not worry: in your case, it is an obvious personal success.”
Though her film career failed to ignite in the states after “Thunderball”, her appearance in the movie did her no harm, at all in Europe and the UK and she continued acting until well into the 1990s, mostly in French language features, though making the occasional English appearance. After the break up of her first marriage, Claudine was married to a businessman until his death in 2008.
