When the shooting spot is in Las Vegas, James Bond would sure need a gadget to do something in the casino. And so it happened in the 1971 Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever. Q, the genius scientist who has been creating magnificent tools for years now introduced an unusual type of electromagnetic rpm ring. This was an electromagnetic ring that can control RPM of any moving object. Bond used it in the casino to manipulate the jackpot machines.
The plot of Diamonds Are Forever was a continuation of its former story- On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. James Bond was desperately looking to eliminate the killer of his wife and when he believed that he has finally got Blofeld, the killer, it was retreat time. M suggested him to go undercover as a diamond smuggler and that brought Bond into a new realm of cruelty. Casino was not the prime spot of this film. Bond has to pass some time in Las Vegas where he was expecting some deliveries from his CIA alley, Leiter. Unlike other gadgets the ring was not a weapon-type rather a fancy flashy stuff that did not bring any real help for Bond.
The real utility of the ring was to influence the slot machines in the casino. As we have already said that it was an electro magnetic device that can control the RPM, which stands for Revolutions Per Minute. This is a measure of how many times a circularly rotated object revolves in a single minute. At that time, when the film was made, there was no computer operated machines and everything was just function of gears and levers. A metal shaft supports the spinning reels, which is connected to a handle mechanism that gets things moving. Bond’s gadget could control the speed of the reel’s spin and thus ensure a jackpot every time.
In the film, Bond was explaining the techniques of the ring to Tiffany, a contact of a diamond smuggler.
